I am focusing today&#8217;s post on ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. If you&#8217;re using anything else, just check for similar settings, and you&#8217;re good to go!<\/p>\n<h2 data-path-to-node=\"9\"><b data-path-to-node=\"9\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Privacy Check #1: Master Your Settings for AI Privacy and Data Security<\/b><\/h2>\n<p id=\"p-rc_565b86b48e04e5ee-53\" data-path-to-node=\"10\"><span data-path-to-node=\"10,1\"><span class=\"citation-229\">The easiest way to upgrade your <\/span><span class=\"citation-229\">AI privacy and data security<\/span><span class=\"citation-229\"> is to check your history and training toggles<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"10,3\">. <\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"10,5\"><span class=\"citation-228\">If you care about privacy but haven&#8217;t touched your settings, that is your first red flag<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"10,7\">. Many people never check whether their chats are being used to improve the model. If they are, that means they are not private. But there&#8217;s a setting that controls that. If the toggle is off, your chats won&#8217;t be used to improve the model.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"11\">\n<li>\n<p id=\"p-rc_565b86b48e04e5ee-54\" data-path-to-node=\"11,0,1\"><span data-path-to-node=\"11,0,1,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"11,0,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\"><span class=\"citation-227\">ChatGPT:<\/span><\/b><span class=\"citation-227\"> Go to <\/span><b data-path-to-node=\"11,0,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"15\"><span class=\"citation-227\">Settings &gt; Data Controls<\/span><\/b><span class=\"citation-227\"> and toggle off <\/span><b data-path-to-node=\"11,0,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"55\"><span class=\"citation-227\">\u201cChat History &amp; Training\u201d<\/span><\/b><span class=\"citation-227\"> (or &#8220;Improve the model for everyone&#8221;) to ensure new chats aren&#8217;t saved or used to improve the model<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"11,0,1,2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p id=\"p-rc_565b86b48e04e5ee-54\" data-path-to-node=\"11,0,1\"><span data-path-to-node=\"11,1,1,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"11,1,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\"><span class=\"citation-226\">Gemini:<\/span><\/b><span class=\"citation-226\"> Your activity is tied to your Google account, so make sure to check your Google account settings<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"11,1,1,2\">. <\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"11,1,1,4\"><span class=\"citation-225\">You can turn off activity tracking or set an auto-delete period (e.g., 3 or 18 months) in your Gemini Apps Activity settings<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"11,1,1,6\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p id=\"p-rc_565b86b48e04e5ee-54\" data-path-to-node=\"11,0,1\"><span data-path-to-node=\"11,2,1,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"11,2,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\"><span class=\"citation-224\">Claude:<\/span><\/b><span class=\"citation-224\"> While generally more privacy-focused by default, chats are still stored temporarily for safety reviews, so maintain the same awareness as with other tools<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"11,2,1,2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 data-path-to-node=\"12\"><b data-path-to-node=\"12\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Privacy Check #2: Use Temporary or Incognito Modes<\/b><\/h2>\n<p id=\"p-rc_565b86b48e04e5ee-57\" data-path-to-node=\"13\"><span data-path-to-node=\"13,1\"><span class=\"citation-223\">Not every conversation needs to live forever in your history<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"13,3\">. <\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"13,5\"><span class=\"citation-222\">If a chat would make you uncomfortable to reread six months from now, use a temporary mode<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"13,7\">. It&#8217;s especially useful for awkward questions, emotional processing, personal situations, sensitive planning and anything else you may not want sitting there later.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"13\">A few examples I would use the temporary chat feature for: relationship situations, drafting a job resignation, personal money concerns, health-related questions or legal scenarios you want to think through.<\/p>\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"14\">\n<li>\n<p id=\"p-rc_565b86b48e04e5ee-58\" data-path-to-node=\"14,0,1\"><span data-path-to-node=\"14,0,1,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"14,0,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\"><span class=\"citation-221\">ChatGPT:<\/span><\/b><span class=\"citation-221\"> Use <\/span><b data-path-to-node=\"14,0,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"13\"><span class=\"citation-221\">Temporary Chat<\/span><\/b><span class=\"citation-221\"> (think of it as incognito mode) for sensitive planning or emotional processing<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"14,0,1,2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p id=\"p-rc_565b86b48e04e5ee-58\" data-path-to-node=\"14,0,1\"><span data-path-to-node=\"14,1,1,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"14,1,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\"><span class=\"citation-220\">Gemini:<\/span><\/b><span class=\"citation-220\"> Look for the dotted conversation cloud symbol next to the new chat button<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"14,1,1,2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p id=\"p-rc_565b86b48e04e5ee-58\" data-path-to-node=\"14,0,1\"><span data-path-to-node=\"14,2,1,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"14,2,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\"><span class=\"citation-219\">Claude:<\/span><\/b><span class=\"citation-219\"> Use the little ghost symbol in the upper right-hand corner to enter incognito mode<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"14,2,1,2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If your preferred chatbot doesn\u2019t have a clean \u2018incognito mode\u2019 button, the closest equivalent is turning off activity tracking or manually deleting chats. If it\u2019s sensitive, don\u2019t type it in.<\/p>\n<h2 data-path-to-node=\"19\"><b data-path-to-node=\"19\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Privacy Check #4: Audit Your Shared Links<\/b><\/h2>\n<p id=\"p-rc_565b86b48e04e5ee-66\" data-path-to-node=\"20\"><span data-path-to-node=\"20,1\"><span class=\"citation-211\">A common but &#8220;sloppy&#8221; privacy risk is forgetting about shared chat links<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"20,3\">. <\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"20,5\"><span class=\"citation-210\">If you&#8217;ve ever clicked &#8220;Share,&#8221; that URL may still be active even if you&#8217;ve forgotten about it<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"20,7\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"p-rc_565b86b48e04e5ee-67\" data-path-to-node=\"21\"><span data-path-to-node=\"21,1\"><span class=\"citation-209\">In ChatGPT, navigate to <\/span><b data-path-to-node=\"21,1\" data-index-in-node=\"24\"><span class=\"citation-209\">Settings &gt; Data Controls &gt; Shared Links<\/span><\/b><span class=\"citation-209\"> to delete any old URLs<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"21,3\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"21\"><span data-path-to-node=\"21,5\"><span class=\"citation-208\">In Gemini, check &#8220;Your public links&#8221; under Settings. However, Gemini is a bit more complicated, because sharing exists via the entire Google ecosystem (Docs, Sheets, links, etc.). So, the risk isn&#8217;t just the shared chat, but also copying outputs into your shared Google Docs or even accidentally sharing files.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"21\"><span data-path-to-node=\"21,5\"><span class=\"citation-208\">In Claude, review &#8220;Shared Chats&#8221; in your Privacy settings<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"21,7\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"21\"><span data-path-to-node=\"21,9\"><span class=\"citation-207\">Remember: simply deleting the chat from your main history isn&#8217;t enough; you must invalidate the shared link itself<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"21,11\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 data-path-to-node=\"22\"><b data-path-to-node=\"22\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Privacy Check #5: Account-Level Security for AI Privacy and Data Security<\/b><\/h2>\n<p id=\"p-rc_565b86b48e04e5ee-68\" data-path-to-node=\"23\"><span data-path-to-node=\"23,1\"><span class=\"citation-206\">Sometimes the risk isn&#8217;t the AI, but your own device security<\/span><\/span><span data-path-to-node=\"23,3\">.
